The Press

Whetstone Books

We are an independent publisher committed to social issue books, education, and community — since 1982 in Brattleboro, Vermont—and, yes, we are right on the banks of the Whetstone Brook.

What We Publish

We publish books that are useful in the world. Our titles span social justice, conflict transformation, cross-cultural understanding, youth empowerment, theater, music, and mindfulness practice. We are a small press with a long history and a clear purpose: to put good books into the hands of people who need them.

A Vermont Tradition

Founded in 1982 on the banks of the Whetstone Brook in Southern Vermont, Whetstone Books grew out of a theater and arts community. Our name reflects our belief that books — like a whetstone — sharpen the mind.

Over four decades we have published titles used in schools, community organizations, and international training programs. Our authors are practitioners: educators, facilitators, artists, and activists who write from lived experience.
